What is Check Your Label?

Check Your Label (CYL) is a campaign to create awareness among consumers on the importance of purchasing communication devices with a valid MCMC label. The campaign is also intended to educate consumers on how they can verify the validity of MCMC label by using Check Your Label mobile application or through a website provided.

What is MCMC label?

MCMC label is a mandatory certification mark indicating that a communications device is certified for compliance to standards according to the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.

  1. New label was effective from 1 June 2015.
  2. Available in electronic or physical forms.
    • Electronic label (e-label) stored in a device operating system / firmware.
    • Physical label in which the certification mark is printed on a sticker affixed to a device or the certification mark is embossed, engraved or printed directly onto the device surface.

Why do you need the label?

A mandatory certification mark to indicate communication devices are certified as required under the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000

May cause frequency interference

Communication devices without MCMC label may be counterfeit / cloned or illegal to be used (e.g. WiFi cracker, frequency jammer)

What are the offences and penalties?

REGULATION OFFENCES PENALTY
REGULATION Regulation 15 OFFENCES

Design, installation, operation, maintenance or modification of communications equipment contrary to standards or likely to cause interoperability / interference / safety

PENALTY On conviction, fine not exceeding RM300,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 3 years or both
REGULATION Regulation 16 OFFENCES

Use, offer for sale or sale of communications equipment contrary to standards, not certified or no longer complies with standards

PENALTY On conviction, fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or both
